Over the past 6 weeks, I have learned a lot about what a PLN is. A Personal Learning Network allows you to connect with a group of people to increase your knowledge on a certain topic. By being apart of a PLN you are able to share ideas, resources, and various types of material that can be shared all over the world. PLNs are painted by engaging with various platforms such as Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram and etc. A PLN should include various voices and the people that you follow should come from various industries, and should have different opinions than your own. Reflecting on my own PLN I have realized that I need to follow more diverse people, meaning interests, age, etc.
I have always seen TikTok and Instagram as “fun” social media platforms, however they can be used for learning. It is surprising how many interesting things I have learned from both of these platforms. TitTok provides you with content from learning how to paint to the day in a life of a teacher and even study notes for the MCAT exam. Instagram now has a similar feature called reels, where similar content is posted.
After taking EDCI 338, I have developed a different view on social media. Before I viewed it as a method to connect and keep in touch with friends and family, I know have a better understanding of all of the benefits it has for teaching and learning. I am excited to further my learning even more on the topic of social media and platforms and how I can incorporate them into my teaching practice.
